Overview

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek takes trekkers to both the north and south base camps of the Kanchenjunga Mountain, offering rare insights into the lifestyle of the locals and visits to Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, is located in the far eastern part of Nepal near the border with Sikkim, a Himalayan state in northeastern India.

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area protects the area, and trekkers need a special permit. Before the mid-1800s, it was believed that Kanchenjunga was the tallest peak in the world. The Kanchanganga region was off-limits to trekkers until the mid-1980s.

Apart from Kanchenjunga, four other subsidiary summits exceed 8,000m, and approximately twenty peaks exceed 7,000m in height. The Kanchenjunga trek is a journey for adventurers who desire to explore trails less traveled and witness elusive snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, and Assamese macaques in their natural habitat.

The sparse population of the mountains comprises the warm-hearted Rai and Limbu people, whose culture traces back to Tibetan origins and a unique belief system based on a blend of Buddhist, Hindu, and animist principles.

The journey to Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek starts with a flight or drive to Bhadrapur/Suketar. Trekkers then begin their climb through the scenic and cultivated foothills into the excellent mountain stronghold of peaks such as Rathong, Kumbhakarna, Jannu, and Kanchenjunga.

This trek to Kanchenjunga is challenging and recommended for experienced trekkers with decent fitness levels. However, the breathtaking landscapes of meandering rivers, cascading waterfalls, verdant meadows, and rhododendron forests, birch, and pine trees make it worth the effort.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek was once quite demanding as trekkers had to carry all necessary equipment, such as food and camping gear. However, with the increasing popularity of the Kanchenjunga trek, teahouses have been set up along the trail, making logistics easier.

The recent inclusion of the Great Himalayan Trail on the Kanchanganga trekking map has boosted tourism in the region, leading to more teahouses opening up along the Kanchanganga route. However, for a solo trekker, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is not permitted and may prove challenging, so it is recommended to trek with a group or a guide.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek's difficulty depends on altitude, weather, and terrain. It is recommended to check the Kanchenjunga trek map and itinerary to plan.

The Kanchenjunga trek cost may vary depending on the season and services. The Kanchenjunga summit trek cost may also differ. The Kanchenjunga trekking permit is mandatory and can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board or a registered trekking agency.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit and Kanchenjunga Circuit trek maps provide detailed information before starting the trip. The Kanchenjunga National Park trek offers a glimpse of unique flora and fauna.

Permits Required for Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

When planning a trek to the breathtaking Kanchenjunga region, understanding the necessary permits and their cost is essential for a seamless adventure

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP): To trek within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, you must obtain this permit, which supports the conservation and preservation efforts of the region.

Cost per person: USD 20 for foreign nationals, NPR 500 (approximately USD 5) for SAARC nationals, and NPR 100 for Nepali citizens.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required for entry into restricted areas near the Tibet border. This permit helps regulate tourism and protect the local environment.

Cost per person: USD 20 per week for the first four weeks. For stays beyond that, the fee increases to USD 25 per week.

These permits must be obtained through a registered Nepali trekking agency, such as Magnificent Himalayan Trek, and the RAP requires a minimum of two international trekkers for processing.

Unforgettable Adventure: Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek with Magnificent Himalayan Treks

26th March, 2022

My Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek with Magnificent Himalayan Treks was an absolute dream come true! This deserves a resounding 5-star review.

The trek itself was breathtaking, with incredible mountain panoramas and diverse landscapes around every turn. But what truly made the experience unforgettable was the incredible team at Magnificent Himalayan Treks.

Their guides were exceptional - professional, knowledgeable, and always attentive to our safety and needs. They made sure we acclimatized properly and were always there to lend a hand (or trekking pole!) Their deep understanding of the Kanchenjunga region made the journey even more enriching.

The entire trek was meticulously organized by Magnificent Himalayan Treks. Logistics from transportation and comfortable accommodations to delicious meals were perfectly handled, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Himalayas.

Reaching a high point on the Kanchenjunga Circuit was an incredible achievement, and it wouldn't have been possible without Magnificent Himalayan Treks' expertise and support.

If you're considering the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, I cannot recommend Magnificent Himalayan Treks highly enough. They provided an exceptional experience that I will cherish forever.
